Last week, I got an email from a ULI Young Leader in South Carolina. (Young Leaders are members under 35 years of age, now 9,000 strong.) While browsing the YLG web site, Mary found the links to the summer Leadership Essentials audio magazine and the cover letter that was sent to our leadership group with the CD. The P.S. offered volunteer leaders a copy of Shackleton's Way and Mary requested one.
Book in hand, Mary emailed me today to say she would use Shackleton as a discussion topic in her next Partnership Forum meeting--the YLG equivalent of ULI's venerable Council experience.
Our members invent their own ULI, picking up the bright shiny pieces that are relevant at the moment, creating their own learning opportunities. Those who go before leave some clues, but for the most part, it's up to you to find your way. Although the web has made that easier in some ways, most members feel like they are on a quest searching for a magic ring. ULI.org is a map and provides lots of answers, but it's up to you to ask the questions.
So, thanks Mary for persevering. Glad you are on the expedition. At least it's a lot warmer in Greenville, South Carolina, than the Antarctic.
