In the last four weeks, I have participated in three different conferences on social responsibility. The first was for those interested in responsible property investing, both real estate professionals and social investors. The second was the Corporate Citizenship conference. The third, ASAE and the Center's Summit on SR, runs two more days.
In all three cases, most of the participants I met were self-appointed Social Responsibility Officers (SROs) for their companies or organizations. No one applied for the job; most invented the job. Many still have other titles with varying levels of authority, but it really doesn't matter. This is who they are and they are now in charge. Most convinced their bosses and their bosses' bosses why this was a good idea. They also got themselves to the event to meet other people like themselves to set about figuring out what an SRO was, exactly.
It doesn't matter what your title is or your functional expertise. If it is who you are, make it so. Soon SR events will be SRO.
